Pre-surgery visits
Before your surgery, a registered nurse will conduct a preadmission evaluation. Plan to spend about two hours to complete this process. Some evaluations may be completed over the phone.
We will discuss your medical history and the type of anesthesia you will receive, and give you specific instructions about your preparation and recovery process.
Please be prepared with a list of prior surgeries, allergies, and the medications you take, and tell the nurse if you have ever had any problems with anesthesia, including nausea after surgery. Let us know about any special needs and ask all the questions you want; this will help us plan your care and may ease uncertainty or anxiety.
Blood tests, x-rays, an EKG, or other tests may be ordered during this appointment.
Please call your surgeon if a change in your physical condition develops prior to surgery, such as a cold, persistent cough, fever or other noticeable symptoms. For hand and orthopedic surgery, call your surgeon prior to surgery if you develop cuts, burns or rashes near the operation site.
What to bring to your pre-surgery appointment:
- Your insurance card, precertification information or authorization slips.
- Any physician orders and papers given to you in the office.
- A list of all your current medications (prescription, over-the-counter, and any herbal supplements), the strength, dosage and how often you take them, or the actual bottles.
- Copies of your medical advance directives, if you have them.
- Copies of any guardian or custody papers.
Surgery Locations and Parking
Depending on your surgery type and scheduling your surgery may take place place at different Mission Hospital locations. Always check with your surgeon’s office on the time and location surgey will take place. Please allow ample time to arrive for surgery and check our Maps & Directions section for additional information or locations and traffic updates. All parking is free. Leave your suitcase in your car until your room has been assigned.
