Medical Weight Management
All of Mission Hospital's weight management programs support the role of nutrition, behavior modification and activity in lifestyle change. Overeating is often due to stress, old habits, or emotions. Identifying these triggers and learning how to manage your food intake as it relates to them is critical for long-term success. We will help you develop an activity program to support weight maintenance.
We know that weight management is an ongoing challenge, and weight lost is so often regained. Mission will support you by continuing to reinforce positive eating and lifestyle behaviors, and helping you manage periodic weight gains that may occur.
Our interdisciplinary staff
Because weight management is so complex, the Mission Weight Management Center has a comprehensive team of medical specialists. These include physicians, both board-certified medical bariatricians and bariatric surgeons; registered dietitians, registered nurses, an exercise specialist, and behaviorist.
The Medical Weight Management program is a team approach to weight loss and consists of four phases:
Phase One: Assessment
You'll begin with a thorough medical and lifestyle assessment, enabling the physician who specializes in bariatric medicine and our professional staff to help you customize a treatment plan that's best for you.
Phase Two: Active Weight Loss
During this phase, which typically lasts for 12 weeks, you will meet weekly in a lifestyle changes group that will help you with your nutrition, activity habits, and behaviors. Medical monitoring begins, which includes physician and nursing assessments as well as blood-work. You consume your daily nutrition from OPTIFAST® Formula and soup.
Phase Three: Transition
During this phase, which typically lasts for 6 weeks, you will slowly be reintroduced to food. During individual appointments, a registered dietitian will help you develop a personalized meal plan. Group lifestyle education classes will continue to reinforce your new eating and activity behaviors. Medical monitoring continues during this phase.
Phase Four: MEDAL Phase (Maintenance, Exercise, Diet and Lifestyle)
This ongoing phase involves your active participation in a supportive environment. This phase consists of a variety of intervention such as weigh-ins, group support, and individual consults with physician and dietitian. By attending Mission's MEDAL program, you can achieve ongoing weight loss and avoid regain, thereby retaining your improved health and appearance rewards. Participation is required for the first six months, and renewable indefinitely.
Nutrition
We offer Optifast® Formula, a high quality, calorie controlled, nutritional formula, which provides 100 percent of the recommended daily intake (RDI) for vitamins and minerals. The program is based on the scientifically proven method of weight loss known as stimuli narrowing, which is decreasing the number of choices available for food intake. For more about the Optifast® Formula, visit www.optifast.com.
