Clinical Rotation and Internship FAQs

Will I be required to complete a background check and pass a drug screening?
Yes, all students who participate in clinical rotations and/or internships at Mission Hospital will need to complete a student background check and pass a student drug screen. If you will be at Mission Health System for a clinical rotation, your instructor will provide you with information on how to complete both requirements. If you are participating in a non-clinical internship, Mission's Workforce Development Specialist will guide you through the process.

I am a Mission Health System employee; do I still need to complete the background check and drug screening?
Yes. Since you will be on site as a student, you will be required to complete a background check and drug screening as a student.

What is the cost of the background check and drug screening?
The cost to complete the background check and drug screening is $55. Some colleges/universities incur the cost for students; therefore, we suggest that you consult with your instructor or academic/career advisor.

What do I need to bring to the drug screen?
You will need to bring a printed copy of your receipt (we will not accept payments at the time of testing) and a photo ID.

What if I do not pass the drug screen?
If you receive a non-negative result, you will have two options:

  • Send the sample for further testing (ex. verify prescription). The cost for the confirmation is $49.00 and must be paid to Occumed Staff Health at the time of the initial drug screen.
  • Report the results of the initial drug screen as a refusal to test.

If the results from the confirmation test are positive or if you refuse to test, you will be ineligible to participate in clinical rotations and/or internships for that year. You will be eligible to retake the drug screen the following year. Mission Health System reserves the right to deny a student participation in clinical rotations and/or internships if there are concerns regarding previous drug screen results and patient/corporate safety.

What if I have a criminal record?
We review criminal records on a case by case basis. We will not allow students to participate in clinical rotations and/or internships if they have a pending charge.

Will I have to get a flu shot? If so, when is the deadline?
All students will be required to provide documentation of receiving the flu shot by December 1st.

Who should I contact if I have questions about the process or need to update my information?
Please contact Lauren Pittman, Workforce Development Specialist, by email (lauren.pittman@msj.org) or phone 828.213.4222
