For Patients and Families

As a patient at Asheville Specialty Hospital, you will have a unique plan of care tailored to your medical needs.  Our goal is to give you the time and attention you need to regain your strength and either return home or transfer to another facility (i.e, Rehab, SNF, Hospice, etc.).

 As the only accredited long term acute care specialty hospital in the region, we provide experienced staff of physicians, nurses, therapists and case workers working closely together to improve the condition of our patients.   Approaching patients from both a physical and emotional standpoint, our care team supports each patient's  goal to achieve a level of wellness  by incorporating varied and specialized patient services.


Patients who may benefit from ASH:

  • Some examples would be patients recovering from:

    • Stroke and guillian-barre (disease affecting the nervous system). 

    • Endocarditis, an infection of the endocardium (related to the heart).

    • Long term intravenous (I.V.) antibiotic therapy related to various other infections.

  • Patients with respiratory failure who may have suffered a respiratory or cardiac arrest, requiring mechanical ventilator weaning.

  • Patients newly diagnosed with kidney insufficiency or disease requiring dialysis support.

  • Patients who have wound infections requiring extensive wound care.

  • Patients who require nutritional support - needing a naso-gastric tube or intravenous nutrition (i.e., patients with pancreatitis, who need IV nutrition to rest their intestines, or those who are unable to eat because they are on mechanical ventilation support.

  • Patients with any type of nutritional impairment or insufficiency.

  • Patients who are experiencing complications with radiation therapy,and who are undergoing extensive chemotherapy treatment for cancer.


Patient Services:

  • 24/7 respiratory therapy and support, provides round the clock respiratory support for patients needing supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation and weaning, and treatments designed to enhance respiratory improvement.

  • Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies 5 to 6 days per week for patients who require strengthening, improvement with activities of daily living, and nutritional and speech support.
  • Nutritional Therapy to monitor diet and supplements as needed for improvement or support.
  • Case management and discharge planning support. One nurse works with each patient from beginning to end to assist with the patients needs during their hospitalization and upon discharge.
  • Cardiac monitoring
  • Pet therapy available
  • Pain management
  • IV therapy for patients who require additional fluid and/or nutritional support
  • Palliative Care to provide patient comfort and pain management
  • Mechanical support in the case of respiratory failure or cardiac arrest
