Purpose OF HAT:

The HealthcareAdvancement Training Program (HAT), is a special program at Mission Hospital designed to help full-time employees find the perfect healthcare career, help with the expense of school, and allow them to work while going to school.

The program encourages others to enter the healthcareprofession, develops a pool of employees qualified and capable of career advancement, addresses the issue of healthcare workforce shortages, and enhances the range of rewards for employees that reflect their high value to Mission Hospitals.


HEALTHCARE ADVANCEMENT TRAINING CLASSES (HAT)

The following classes are currently being offered to full-time Mission Hospital employees, on the Memorial Campus.

Basic Skills
Reading, Math, and GED Preparation

This class is designed to assist staff in improving their reading and math skills, and prepare to take and pass the GED Test.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

This class is designed to assist staff with limited English speaking ability improve their English. Additionally, the class will assist those employees whose first language is not English, learn to speak and write English. The class will be taught by an A-B Tech instructor, and will be offered each semester.

Program Description:

HAT was established to enable full-time Mission Hospital staff to enroll in an adult basic education or English as a Second Language class, in order to prepare for a start in a healthcare career. The classes are offered during hours outside of the employees' normal work schedule on Mission campus, and are taught by instructors from the local Asheville Buncombe Technical College (A-B Tech).

Employees attend a two-hour class, one day per week, and their salary for time spent in class is paid by Mission Hospitals.

Application Criteria:

Full-time staff members who have been employed by Mission for a minimum of six months, and are in good standing (no written corrective action in effect), are eligible for enrollment in HAT.

Criteria:

  1. Applicant enrolls in the Mission's HAT Program to improve basic educational competency, and advance their personal and professional capabilities.
  2. Applicant submits an application for  approval/eligibility to the HAT Program Coordinator. The application will include, but is not limited to, the following information:
    1. Student goals
    2. Educational status
    3. Commitment to attend all HAT classes on a regular basis
  3. Applicant must obtain permission to enter the HAT Program from his/her supervisor.
  4. An A-B Tech staff must test the applicant prior to enrollment in HAT classes.


What Is HAT?
