The purpose of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program performed in the ambulatory care setting at Mission Hospital in collaboration with Mountain Area Health Education Center Family Health Center is to provide training, mentoring, and evaluation for pharmacists seeking additional education in a wide variety of ambulatory care areas.
The residency program develops ambulatory care practitioners who provide pharmaceutical care services in innovative settings in order to meet unmet health care needs. The ultimate goal of our program is to develop pharmacists who are compassionate, competent, professional clinicians who are able to enhance or develop new ambulatory care services and who share their skills with others by serving as effective teachers and leaders.

The majority of the residency curriculum is longitudinal, which allows the resident to follow the outcomes of panels of patients throughout the year. Residents are responsible for providing pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages and provide patient education, monitor for drug related problems, perform physical assessments, establish therapeutic goals and communicate with primary care physicians.
Pharmaceutical care is provided longitudinally at several core sites that include:
- Mission Hospital "My Healthy Life" wellness programs/Asheville Project™ (Nationally recognized, award winning)
- MAHEC Family Health Center
- MAHEC Anticoagulation Clinics at Deerfield and Givens Communities
- Mission Hospital Health Education Center
- Mission Hospital Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy Services
- Mission Community Pharmacy and Medical Center Pharmacy
Learning experiences include:
- Providing care for “My Healthy Life” and Asheville Project™ patients
- Providing care in a family medicine residency clinic using the patient-centered medical home model
- Providing care for patients in multiple Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner-managed clinics
- Providing MTM services for patients at an outpatient pharmacy clinic
- Participating in a Medication Assistance Program for low-income patients
- Teaching in an American Diabetes Association-accredited diabetes education program
- Participation in a Teaching Certificate Program
- Conducting outcomes studies for ambulatory programs
- Conducting continuous quality improvement projects
- Precepting pharmacy students, educating family practice residents, and participating in weekly didactic sessions, seminars and journal clubs
- Rounding with an inpatient family practice service and facilitating continuity of care
- Participating in an international health curriculum that focuses on improving the health of the people of Honduras and includes a medical mission trip with the organization Shoulder-to-Shoulder (as travel funds allow)
- Serving as camp counselors at a diabetes camp for children

Our program directors: Our residency program directors have a great deal of experience precepting residents and facilitating experiences that develop your ambulatory care skills and knowledge.
Program Director: Ben Smith, PharmD, BCACP is a former ambulatory care resident at Mission. He is the team leader for the Medication Assistance Program (MAP), which provides medications and longitudinal disease management services to underserved populations. Dr. Smith also provides disease management for Asheville Project™ patients.
Assistant Director: Bill Hitch, PharmD, BCPS, CPP directs the Pharmacotherapy Department at the MAHEC Family Health Center. His responsibilites include rounding on an inpatient family medicine service, oversight of clinical pharmacy services in a family medicine outpatient clinic, and coordination of rotations and the seminar course for 4th year pharmacy students. Dr. Hitch is also a graduate of the Mission residency program.
Our preceptors: Our preceptors are dedicated to residency teaching and serve as learning facilitators, mentors, and models.
Our health systems: Our health systems are state-of-the-art and offer unique learning opportunities. Current programs focus on diabetes, asthma, hypertension, depression, hyperlipidemia, anticoagulation, osteoporosis, and medication assistance. Mission Hospital is nationally recognized for our focus on improving the health of the community. We are licensed for over 800 beds. The hospital system consistently has been ranked among the top hospitals of its size. At the heart of our ambulatory care programs are our pharmacist-managed programs. MAHEC is a regional leader in innovative approaches to interdisciplinary health care and education, and sponsors family medicine, OBGyn, and dental residencies as well as a geriatric fellowship. Our Family Health Center has won multiple awards for excellence in diabetes care and has received NCQA recognition as a Level III Patient-Centered Medical Home.

It should also demonstrate some knowledge of the hospital and why you specifically want to come to this residency program. It should be no longer than 2 pages of 8.5 x 11 inch paper, single spaced.
