The UNC Lineberger/ Mission Affiliation

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only public comprehensive cancer center for the State and the people of North Carolina. Their mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and across the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.

UNC Lineberger was named after the Lineberger family of Belmont, NC, pioneers in the textile industry. Between the years of 1921 and 1968, eleven family members graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. It was four brothers who were key players in the creation of the Lineberger Cancer Center - Archibald '21, Henry '24, Harold '26 and Joe '33. Archibald established the Lineberger Foundation in 1944. In 1977, the foundation pledged $1 million to a building fund for a proposed cancer research center which was completed in 1984.

• N.C. Cancer Hospital - the clinical home for UNC Lineberger - completed in 2009 and serves as home to 110 physicians and provides the latest technology to diagnose and treat cancer.
• UNC Lineberger/N.C. Cancer Hospital treats patients from every county in NC with more than 100,000 patient visits each year.
• Multidisciplinary programs are available for most cancers, giving patients the benefit of many medical specialists in one place.
• Over 160 clinical trials of the latest treatments developed at UNC are available through affiliation with national clinical trials groups
• The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Support Program provides compassionate and effective support programs for all NC cancer patients and their families.
• UNC Lineberger is home to internationally recognized research programs in Cancer Cell biology, Immunology, Molecular, Carcinogenesis, Cancer Genetics, Molecular Therapeutics, and Virology that investigate the molecular and genetic basis of cancer and progression.
