Real Trauma Stories

Linda VanHook - MAMA Patient
A grandmother on a zipline. Well, that's what my 10-year old grandson Tyler and I thought he was getting ready to see. As I grabbed hold of the bars and was set for my take-off - not wearing any type of harness - I realized I couldn't hold on and fell 17 feet, landing flat on my back.

Megan Collins - Trauma Patient
It was December 30th when I took a turn for the worse, quite literally. While driving down Leicester Highway, my car skidded and crashed into a retaining wall. Beyond that, I don't remember much.

Doug Dewitt - MAMA Flight Nurse
When you really break it down for these patients, it all comes down to speed and getting them to Mission for the treatment they need. Think about it - we get to fly 150 m.p.h. in a straight line with no roads or traffic and where our only obstacle is weather.

Sharon Hinshaw - MAMA Flight Paramedic
For us, we often first have to deal with the issues surrounding the patients at the scene, so we can get close enough to care and stabilize them while we're getting them out of a car or off a cliff.

At Mission we are a state-designated Level II Trauma Center, we are here to save lives. Patients, just like the ones you are reading about, with life and limb threatening injuries come through our doors and are met by an organized, highly-trained, multidisciplinary team dedicated to their care.
