Inpatient Care

At some point in your treatment or therapy, you may need to be admitted to the hospital. Mission Hospitals Cancer Services provides high quality care in a smaller, more personal setting and gives you and your family the support you need during your stay—whether it's for a few days or longer.

Diagnosing Cancer

Cancer Services utilizes a wide range of diagnostic tools, including x-rays, ultrasound scanning, PET/CT scanning, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine and pathology (lab tests). With the help of these tools—the latest in diagnostic testing and technology—our highly trained staff determine if you do have cancer and assess the type and extent of the disease.

Cancer Unit

Adults who need inpatient cancer care receive it in a 32-bed, state-of-the-art unit spanning the 10th floor of the St. Joseph building. Six skylights bathe the area with natural light and an indoor garden terrace with a panoramic view of Asheville and the mountains beyond offers a comforting spot for patients and families to gather. All rooms are private and each enjoys a mountain view.

Our Approach

Cancer Services is dedicated to providing excellent patient care by keeping the patient and his or her family the center of our focus. Our multidisciplinary team consists of a specialized nursing staff, discharge planners or care managers, pharmacists, dieticians, chaplains and a clinical nurse specialist. With this team approach, we are able to competently treat people with all major cancers, including leukemias. Learn more about our team members.

Caring for the Whole Patient

The medical care we give our patients may include the use of national protocols, clinical trials, chemotherapy, radiation implant therapy, and telemetry. Considering emotional needs, the unit is reaching beyond standard medical care to offer pet therapy and music therapy to patients. These therapies have been shown to have a calming effect and a positive influence on a person's state of mind. The staff and physicians also work to provide effective pain control and to tend to the patient and family's end-of-life care needs with compassion.
