Landing Zone Preparation

  • Day and night: 100' x 100'
  • Free of trees, power lines, wires, poles or obstacles
  • Relatively flat
  • Control bystanders in a safe area and secure animals
  • Avoid the use of bright lights as the helicopter approaches to land
  • May use emergency vehicles or POVs to mark corners
  • May use traffic cones to mark corners
  • Caution in using road flares to mark LZ
  • MAMA does not require a fire truck to be on scene, but it is great if you have one there

Aircraft Safety

  • Do not approach the aircraft unless instructed to by a flight crew member
  • Never approach the aircraft from the rear
  • If you can feel the wind from the aircraft landing, YOU ARE TOO CLOSE
  • Remove hats; use chin straps on helmets. Secure loose objects, wear eye and ear protection if available.

This is a brief overview and not intended to take the place of the MAMA Scene Team class.
