Diabetes Education
Diabetes Self-Care Course
Mission's Diabetes Self-Care Course begins with a personal one-on-one education assessment. It's followed by a series of five group classes that meet weekly for approximately two hours. Our caring educators give you the information you need to manage your diabetes and make successful self-care decisions. You'll learn about your own particular type of diabetes (and other types), and topics such as:
- How monitoring your blood glucose level can become a normal part of your daily routine
- How the medicine used for diabetes works in your body
- How to balance nutrition and meal planning
- Proper foot care
- The role of exercise in managing diabetes
- The effect of stress on your blood glucose level and how you can manage the stress in your life
We encourage family members and friends to attend all of our educational sessions.
Individual Diabetes Consultations
You may set up an individual consultation regarding any topic related to diabetes self-care. It may be a good idea to bring your family, and you are encouraged to do so. We understand how important it is to have the support of those around you as you learn to make the necessary lifestyle and behavioral changes to help manage your diabetes.
Gestational Diabetes Course
These small group consultations for women who have diabetes during pregnancy include:
- Overview of gestational diabetes
- How to monitor blood glucose levels and what the targets are
- How to balance nutrition and meal planning
- Each participant is provided with a blood glucose meter for use during her pregnancy.
Insulin Pump Training
The Insulin Pump Course offers individual consultations including:
- Pre-Pump evaluation-assisting patients to choose an insulin pump that is right for them.
- Pump Session #1-Programming the insulin pump and starting saline in the pump to wear and practice for up to 1 week.
- Pump Session # 2-Starting insulin in the pump and a discussion on issues you may have, including troubleshooting high and low blood glucoses, and learning some of the advanced features on the pump.
