Diabetes Management

Diabetes Management Program

Diabetes education and support can mean the difference between a healthy life and one cut short and/or diminished by the many serious problems triggered by this illness.

The Diabetes Management Program at Mission's Health Education Center offers a program of patient education and support which has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) since it was first recognized in March 1994. This prestigious Certificate of Recognition identifies this education service as meeting the national standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.

Services and resources available to you include:

  • Diabetes Education, such as: 
    • Diabetes Self-Care Course
    • Individual Consultation which focuses on a particular area of self-care, such as exercise or foot care
    • Gestational Diabetes course for women who have diabetes during pregnancy
    • Insulin Pump course for individuals beginning insulin pump therapy
  • Support groups for adults and children
  • Health Screenings at locations in the community, or at Mission
  • Pediatric program for children with diabetes and their families
  • An illustrated cookbook for healthy eating
  • Community outreach including health fairs, community and civic group presentations and special events such as cooking demonstrations. For more information call 828-213-9210

The Diabetes Management Program is provided by a team of educators, most who have achieved national certification as Diabetes Educators. Team members include:

  • nurses
  • dietitians
  • pharmacists
  • a behaviorist/certified clinical social worker, and
  • an exercise specialist.
