Why Build a New Cancer Center in Western North Carolina?
“You’re suddenly dropped by parachute into a foreign country – without knowledge of the language, without friends or money, and with no control over what might happen…”
–A cancer survivor, describing what a cancer diagnosis feels like
That moment of realization is why Mission Hospital is embarking on a bold, new project to build the Mission Cancer Center by 2012. Our vision is to create a place that will guide patients and their families through the very best care available, in a centralized, convenient location close to home, and in an environment dedicated to comfort, care and healing.
| The Compelling Case for a Cancer Center at Mission Hospital As the population of our region increases and ages, the need for cancer care will continue to grow. As the primary referral center for cancer care in the region, Mission Hospital must be positioned to provide timely diagnosis, evidence-based treatment using the latest research and technologies, and survivorship care to our community. Cancer care must be provided locally, to ensure the supportive presence of friends and family, to ensure timeliness, and to lessen the financial burden of traveling long distances for treatment. Building this new cancer center is critical to meeting the current and future demand for cancer care in our community, and to continuing to provide the level of excellence in healthcare for which Mission Hospital is nationally known.
