Brachytherapy, or internal radiation, places the source of high-energy rays as close as possible to the cancer site. This particular radiation therapy includes:
- Implants of radioactive materials sealed in wires, seeds, capsules or needles
- Use of both high dose and low dose brachytherapy sources
- Intercavitary internal therapy which involves placing the radiation sources within a cavity of the body such as the lung or esophagus
- Interstitial therapy in which the radioactive source including seeds of palladium or iodine are implanted directly into the tumor-bearing tissue
