Benefits of Integrative Health
Research studies show that complementary and holistic therapies can help hospital patients in many areas:
Requesting Integrative Healthcare services
If you would like to have one of our integrative health services, ask your nurse to schedule a consultation with one of our Holistic Nurse Specialists. He or she will also check with your physician and then place the order. The services may be provided by a nurse within your own care unit, or from another area of the hospital. Regardless, you can be confident that he or she has been carefully trained, possesses clinical credentials and shares your goal of healing and wellness. All therapies administered will be entered into your medical chart and tracked with your stay at Mission Hospital. Integrative Healthcare services are offered to Mission patients as part of their hospital stay and are free of charge.
Aromatherapy
The use of essentials oils (fragrant oils made from plants such as lavendar and mint) to encourage relaxation and healing. Aromatherapy is often helpful in easing anxiety, pain and nausea following surgery. A 2009 International Journal for Research report found marked patient improvement in all areas in a scientific analysis of olfactory effects on mood, physiology and behavior - (International Journal of Neuroscience 2009; 119: 263-290.) There are many other examples of clinical studies on Aromatherapy proving the medical benefits.
A mind-body technique that helps people control their own heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and muscle tension. It is very helpful for stress reduction and healing.
Healing Touch
An energy therapy based on current nursing theory, used to promote relaxation, healing, and the balancing of mind, body, and spirit. The practitioner uses a light therapeutic touch focusing on areas of discomfort, tension and illness or injury. A 2008 study resulted in compelling evidence that Healing Touch Therapy helps reduce pain and anxiety. (Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, 12(1), 113-120. There are many other examples of clinical studies proving the medical benefits of Healing Touch.)
Guided Imagery
The practitioner speaks to the patient in a calming, focused way to help him or her direct his awareness and imagination towards healing. There are many research proven benefits to guided imagery to take advantage of while staying at Mission Hospital.
Massage Therapy
The use of hands directly on the body with the goal of relieving muscle tension, increasing circulation, and promoting relaxation. Though we all know how good a massage feels to the body and soul, there are many proven benefits to massage therapy in a clinical setting.
Breathing Techniques
Used to teach breathing that is deep and calm, to help improve physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Pet Therapy
Therapy dogs provide unconditional love and acceptance. They don't care that your hair is gone from chemotherapy, that a stroke has left you unable to speak, or that you have a disability. With the help of their human handlers, they create an immediate healing bond with patients and their loved ones.
