Hospital Cost Comparison Chart (non-academic hospitals)

The numbers in this chart represent the gross inpatient charges per patient for actual hospitals in North Carolina. These hospitals provide extensive specialized care and inpatient services, and while they are not affiliated with a university, they provide clinical training for medical students and residents who have already completed their preclinical training at a medical university.

Case Mix Index (CMI) is used to determine the adjusted charge per case at each hospital. CMI factors in the different mix of cases within each patient population. A higher CMI reflects a higher intensity of care (typically for more serious or more complex procedures or conditions), which in turn requires a greater use of resources and higher costs. Adjusting each hospital's charge per case with their CMI helps to keep all of the hospitals on a more comparable field.

These findings show that Mission is among the most competitively priced hospitals represented in this survey. The difference between Mission's charge per person and the combined average of the other seven hospitals is $2,964. Given this pricing and Mission's national recognition for quality, Mission Hospitals is one of the best values for inpatient services.
