When your child has been diagnosed with cancer, you need a great deal of support. So, from the very start, the cancer professionals at Mission Hospitals aim to respect the special needs of you and your child, as you both face the challenges of living with a cancer diagnosis.
Our Patients
Our patients range in age from infants to older adolescents in their late teens. We treat patients for a variety of illness, including:
- leukemia
- brain tumors
- other solid tumors (lymphoma, Wilms' tumor, Rhabdomyosarcoma, hepatoblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma)
hematologic disorders (hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, sickle cell disease, platelet disorders)
Our Services
On our 16-bed unit, we provide both outpatient and inpatient services.
Patients have access to Phase II and Phase III clinical research trials that allow them to participate in cutting-edge protocols for treatment of initial and recurrent childhood cancers (90-95% of our patients will end up participating in one of the many research trials offered annually.)
Alternative therapies for children including instruction and guidance from certified art and music therapists.
Mission Hospitals is a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), a national organization that sets nationwide standards for treating childhood cancer. Approved and regulated by the National Cancer Institute, COG requires that its members provide comprehensive services for the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer. Mission Hospitals membership in COG means that we are able to provide the same standard of care, the same treatments and the same protocols that are available in much larger, more distant institutions.
In short, we can offer your child the national standard of care for cancer treatment in a local setting that's convenient for you, your family and your family physician. No leaving friends, no leaving school, no leaving the familiar setting of home to receive treatment. It's all right here-community-based, family-centered care.
Our professional staff is trained to diagnose and treat cancer patients of all ages; they are able to meet the special needs of infants and school-age children, as well as older adolescents. All patients receive lifetime follow-up care as well.
