At the Wound Therapy Center we offer both a high-risk foot care clinic and therapeutic footwear services. You can learn more about each service below.
Pedorthics/Therapeutic Footwear
At Mission's Wound Therapy Center, a certified footwear specialist may evaluate patients who have painful or disabling conditions of the foot. Therapeutic footwear is by nature medical, and fitting it to the patient's foot requires special skills and care. A certified pedorthist is an individual who:
- has met requirements for initial and continuing education,
- has passed a comprehensive written exam, and
- adheres to pedorthic practice standards established by the Board for Certification in Pedorthics (BCP).
A pedorthist can make or modify orthoses (custom-made shoe inserts) for patients to reduce pain, improve function and prevent new problems. Pedorthists also help to prevent complications by educating patients and relaying potential problems to their doctors. To find a Certified Pedorthist, visit the BCP's website at www.cpeds.org.
Foot Care Clinic
Specialized nurses (WOCNs) in the Wound Therapy Center provide comprehensive high-risk foot care for people with diabetes, lower extremity arterial disease, and neuropathy. They may also treat people who have pain or difficulty walking associated with fungal nail infections. Their services include:
- Monitoring patients' feet Trimming and cutting toenails
- Paring corns and calluses to prevent skin breakdown or ulcerations
- Treating ulcers, infections and other problems such as ingrown toenails
Because diabetes often results in nerve damage in the feet, our pedorthists and foot care specialists counsel and treat a high number of people with diabetes.
