The majority of patients visit the Sleep Center via a doctor's referral, although we do accept self-referrals for adults.
Typically, a patient with a sleep problem will visit his or her family doctor prompted by a frustrated spouse, by a sleep-related injury, by illness or by another event such as job loss.
The primary physician may, after assessment, prescribe medication, counseling and/or a change in the patient's sleep hygiene. If the physician determines that the symptoms require more in-depth assessment, the patient may be referred to the Sleep Center.
Exam and Consultation
Once we receive your medical records, we will schedule an initial consultation and provide a questionnaire to be filled out and returned prior to your first visit. You will be asked to bring your bed partner to the initial consultation. Often, this person can provide important insight into your sleep habits.
During your first visit, one of our doctors will conduct an interview and a physical exam. For example, if you are suffering from excessive snoring, the doctor will examine your airway and listen to your chest. The exam and consultation allows the doctor to determine whether you need to go to the sleep lab for further testing. Sometimes, the problem may turn out to be psychologically based (for example, due to life stress) and the patient will be referred to a psychologist.
