General Surgery

General surgery encompasses a broad range of procedures performed by surgeons who are highly specialized and intensively trained. Becoming a general surgeon requires at least five years of post-graduate training beyond medical school.

General surgeons provide comprehensive surgical care in the following major areas, consulting with specialists where appropriate:

  • Abdomen and its contents, including the pelvis
  • Alimentary (Gastrointestinal) tract
  • Breast
  • Chest
  • Critically ill patients
  • Endocrine system
  • Head and neck
  • Oncology
  • Skin, soft tissue and musculoskeletal system
  • Trauma
  • Vascular system

Some of the most common types of general surgery at Mission fall into three categories — laparoscopic, abdominal and cancer.
