At Mission, orthopedic surgeons specially trained in sports medicine are able to perform minimally invasive (small incision) surgery on virtually any joint in the body. Among the mostly frequently performed arthroscopic procedures (related to common sports-related situations) are:
- repair of torn knee ligaments (referred to as ACL reconstruction)
- repair of damaged knee meniscus
- arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction
- tightening of shoulder ligaments
- ankle and wrist arthroscopy
The Orthopedic Center performes over 1,000 arthroscopic sports medicine procedures annually. Moreover, Mission is the only hospital in Western North Carolina providing hip arthroscopy.
Many of the arthroscopic sports medicine surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis at the hospital's new freestanding Asheville Surgery Center. Patients are usually discharged the same day. A small percentage of procedures require an overnight hospital stay.
