Nine area surgeons are dedicated to the practice of hand surgery; they perform a wide variety of minimally invasive (small incision) hand surgeries, as well as highly delicate microsurgery such as replantation of accidentally amputated fingers.
Common operations performed on an outpatient basis include:
- wrist arthroplasty
- wrist arthroscopy
- trigger finger release
Such procedures are normally carried out at the hospital's new freestanding Asheville Surgery Center. Patients are usually discharged the same day. A small percentage of procedures require an overnight hospital stay.
In 2000, orthopedic surgeons at Mission performed approximately 2,500 hand surgeries, including a rare toe-to-thumb transplant.
