Mission's designated Trauma Center functions as the lead facility for western North Carolina's Mountain Area Regional Trauma Advisory Committee (MATRAC). A regional advisory committee (RAC) consists of representatives of trauma care providers and community members. Each RAC in North Carolina is affiliated with a level I or II trauma center for the purpose of regional trauma planning and establishing and maintaining a coordinated trauma system. The Mountain Area Trauma RAC, is one of eight in the state. In western North Carolina, the Mountain Area RAC is responsible for:
- Developing trauma care guidelines
- Strengthening communication among trauma care providers
- Promoting education and prevention

North Carolina's Regional Advisory Committee system was mandated by laws passed by the state legislature. Each hospital in the state was required to affiliate with one or more RACs. Mission is the designated trauma center for the seventeen-county Mountain Area RAC.
