Pediatric pulmonology provides treatment for children with lung disorders, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, restrictive lung disease, chest wall/neuro-muscular disease, and abnormal chest x-rays.
We also treat sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, daytime sleepiness, and neuro-muscular disorders predisposed to sleep disorders. We perform bronchoscopies to look for airway abnormalities and to retrieve samples from patients who have lung infiltration.
The Respiratory Care Department has a dedicated Neonatal and Pediatric staff who are certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) . They also hold NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and , PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certificates. The therapist are vital members of the multidisciplinary team in the 51 bed NICU and 8 bed PICU.
Specially trained Respiratory Therapists are vital members of the Neonatal Pediatric Service Line and Infant Transport Team. The transport team is responsible for working both ground (Regional Transport) and or by air with the Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA).The therapists attend all high risk deliveries, and are responsible for ventilator management using patient driven protocols, surfactant administration, intubations, and other oxygen and treatment modalities. The PICU and the new NICU use state-of-the-art equipment such as high frequency oscillatory ventilation or (HFOV), along with conventional ventilation, Infant Flow CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), Nitric Oxide, Vapotherm and NPPV (Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation). Members of the Pediatric Team can also be part of the Infant Transport Team, which includes a Registered Respiratory Therapist and a Registered Nurse.
The Neonatal Services of Respiratory Care is a member of The Vermont Oxford Network, which is a non-profit voluntary collaboration of healthcare professionals, dedicated to improving the quality and safety of medical care for newborn infants and their families. Established in 1988, the Network is now comprised of over 400 Neonatal Intensive Care Units, predominantly in the United States and including centers in Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
