An infectious disease specialist assists the primary care physician in diagnosing and treating patients with infectious diseases with atypical features, prolonged or recurrent symptoms, or life-threatening complications. Patients include those with HIV infection and disease, fevers of unknown origin, recurrent infections, bone and joint infections and central nervous system infections (meningitis, encephalitis, shunt infections).
When treating HIV-infected patients, we provide guidance on antiviral and prophylactic medications, immunologic monitoring, and investigative medications. Tropical medicine management, including post-travel infectious illness and pre-travel immunizations, is also available.
